"There are so many opportunities for our graduates in the South East...there are also numerous postgraduate opportunities for graduates to continue their study, develop a research career and develop a professional pathway.”
At the launch of our new university, Head of the Department of Nursing and Health Care Dr Sara Kennedy, Dean of the School of Health Science Prof Wells and Prof Nolan NRCI met Minister Harris and said to him how much his support for the establishment of SETU meant in terms of the progression and impact of the Health Sciences in the region and briefly informed him about the School’s plans for optometry and the expansion of nursing programmes to address the needs of the south east
According to Dr Kennedy, “Work force planning statistics indicate the growing need for careers in a variety of health care positions in Ireland in the coming years. Graduates from SETU Department of Nursing and Health Care have 100% record in securing employment in healthcare settings within the region.
“There are so many opportunities for our graduates in the South East. Our conferring takes place in November for Nursing and Applied Health Care Programmes and many of our graduates have already secured employment. There are also numerous postgraduate opportunities for graduates to continue their study, develop a research career and develop a professional pathway.”
The Department of Nursing and Health Care in SETU provide programmes in General, Mental Health and Intellectual Disability Nursing together with a programme in Applied Health Care with numerous opportunities to progress on to post graduate studies.
It has never more important to provide pathways to nursing and health care education as career opportunities in the health care industry continue to rise. One of the many hugely successful initiatives run by the Department of Nursing and Health Care at SETU is its Try Nursing event. Running over a number of years and hugely popular with students, parents and teachers, the Try Nursing events aim to promote careers in nursing and health care to students in second level education.
Dr Kennedy, Head of the Department of Nursing and Health Care, is eager to focus on growing and retaining nursing graduates in the South East of Ireland saying that “we hope to engage with senior cycle prospective students through the Try Nursing events and give an early insight into Nursing and Health care programmes on offer at SETU. Both events are now fully booked which shows the level of interest from students in the region.”
