WIT is a finalist in four categories in the 2020 Education Awards

The Education Awards recognise, encourage and celebrate excellence in the third level education sector on the island of Ireland from both State and privately funded institution

Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) has been shortlisted in four categories in the 2020 Education Awards which take place on Thursday, 20 February 2020.

The Education Awards recognise, encourage and celebrate excellence in the third level education sector on the island of Ireland from both State and privately funded institutions.

The Award categories are designed to highlight the key areas that impact upon student performance.

The institute’s Higher Diploma in Computer Science Online is on the shortlist in both the Best Use of Educational Technology/ICT Initiative of the Year and Best Online Learning Experience categories.

Dr Eamonn de Leastar, course leader for the online course said: “The entire HDip in Computer Science team (academic, technical support and administration) are delighted to be shortlisted for two awards (including Best Use of Educational Technology/ICT Initiative of the Year, and Best Online Student Experience). Online education is a major opportunity for WIT and our learner community. We’ve broken new ground with this programme and with the technologies used to deliver it, by working creatively together to significantly enhance the student experience."

Calmast STEM Outreach Centre at WIT is a finalist in the Best Education Outreach Award.

Calmast Manager Dr Cordula Weiss said: “As WIT’s STEM engagement centre we work year-round at bringing STEM activities into local communities and inspiring schoolchildren in particular. We are delighted to be shortlisted for the Best Education Outreach Award for our work in bringing STEM to schoolchildren and influencing the future technologists, scientists and engineers.”

WIT is also a finalist in the Best Marketing / Communications Team category.

Olive O’Connor, Marketing & Communications Manager at WIT said: “We were delighted to learn that we had been nominated for such a prestigious award. The team works really hard year in year out and it’s really nice to have that effort recognised.”
