Mary returned to education in 1998 at the WIT School of Business

One of the key differences an accounting degree made to mature student Mary’s life was a difference in income and levels she could work at

Mary Murphy had her eye on the BA in Accounting after her Leaving Cert and opted for a science degree in another city. When she failed that due to illness she found office, shop, food, hotel and bar work at the levels, as she says herself, she could get with only a Leaving Certificate. Since graduating in 2001 Mary has found the level of work she could get and income has changed.

About me:

I was a mature student in my early thirties. I value academic qualifications highly and I was delighted to get the opportunity to study for a professional Bachelor of Arts.

What words of advice do you have for new students?

Study and work consistently from day 1. It will stand to you in your final results and academic reference.

What have been the highlights of your college experience?

Getting full marks for my character assessment from the Principal Examiner was an unexpected thrill. He reminded me of it recently when I bumped into him in the New Year. It brought back good memories.

How did Clubs & Socs add to your college experience?

I found days out with the Racing Supporters Club mid-term very motivational as well as enjoying.

How did your experience at WIT help get you to where you are now?

Working steadily throughout the three years to get the full ‘Bachelor of Arts in Accounting’ on my parchment was great training in consistency and perseverance and has stood to me in life since. The level of work I could get and thereby income and everything else that effects improved quickly.

Anything you'd like to add

I would heartily recommend mature studenthood if you feel you have the ability to get a higher education qualification. It will enrich your life as well as improve your income of successful.
