Whether you’re hoping to start college next September, or are the parent of a school leaver, a career guidance teacher or an adult learner, our next virtual open event will have something for you
Having held its first virtual open day in Spring 2020 SETU has been able to bring its experience to create a virtual open day that mirrors the real thing as much as possible. But it’s my first virtual open day, what do I do, you may ask? Read our tips below.
Advice for everyone
As with every open day you’ll have a better time if you:
1. Get the details: Arrive on time by checking out our open day portal website a day or two in advance. You can find out where you need to be and at what time. We have a ridiculous number of talks to choose from.
2. Virtual campus tours: Take time to do the campus tour (our new virtual one will make you feel like you’re walking the halls of WIT) so you get a sense of what it would be like to be a student when Covid restrictions change.
3. Have some questions ready: What are your burning questions? Have none? What is it that you don’t know yet about college life, choosing courses, or what South East Technological University is like? Make a point to ask someone something, you will feel a great sense of achievement you had the courage to do so.
4. Explore our courses: There’s almost 70 CAO courses; and so many postgraduate courses if you are thinking of follow-on study or are indeed looking to boost your credentials with a level 9 qualification. For adult learners there’s so much to choose from – part-time, flexible, Springboard and various Government funded places. On the day or before you come to our virtual open day check out what interests you, have some questions ready, and attend our talks and ask some questions.
5. Know what you don’t like: Sometimes it’s easier to go around an exhibition hall or flick through a list of talks knowing what definitely is not for you. Still you may be left with a long list of talks or stands you need to get around to. Check out our downloadable booklets at www.wit.ie/how which will help you figure out what you’re not interested in and what you are interested in. There’s even a booklet for parents of CAO applicants.
And finally we have a few words for some of the different people attending:
Advice for parents of prospective students
The great thing about a virtual open day is you can go on your own or with the CAO applicant in your life – if you’re attending talks together make sure you’re using a big enough screen – how about connecting your device to the largest TV in the house for maximum effect.
Advice for school leavers and secondary school students
Sure, a virtual open day doesn’t give you the chance to check out students from other schools or have the craic on the bus to Waterford, but it does give you something else….
The chance to forget being cool in front of your mates and find out information that will make the next few years of your life easier. This is the chance to wander wherever you want to go on the virtual tour, rather than the buildings your friends are interested in. This is your chance to tune in and hear every word of the talk about that course that sounds interesting to you and no one else. This is your chance to turn up at a booth in the exhibition hall that speaks to you.
Advice for adult learners
Postgrad, springboard, flexible, part-time, Government-funded courses, mature students. What’s the difference and what’s best for you is one of the benefits of attending our virtual open events – who knows you may discover you can start college sooner than you thought. Talk to us and we will point you in the right direction.
