DojoMór believes that an understanding of programming is increasingly important and that it’s easier to learn these skills early if there is an opportunity to do so
Calmast, WIT’s STEM engagement centre is one of nine hosts involved in DojoMór 2020, the nationwide, online coding fun day for young people aged 7 – 17 starting at 10am on Saturday, 24 October, 2020.
Multiple workshops will be hosted virtually and will deliver fun coding activities like programming a micro-chip, coding a virtual robot, building a software app, making music, building a website, and creating games.
Book by midnight Friday
This virtual event, starts at 10am on Saturday, 24 October. There are currently 5,000 registrations from around the country and bookings can be made up until midnight this Friday at www.dojomor.ie.
DojoMór believes that an understanding of programming is increasingly important in the modern world and that it’s easier to learn these skills early if there is an opportunity to do so. The workshops on offer this Saturday are designed to do exactly this - create that opportunity for young Irish people; and give them some practical skills and valuable experience that they can nurture and develop further into the future. Workshops include:
- Scratch – Create games and animations
- Lightbot – Programming made easy
- Thunkable – Building a software app
- Vex Robotics – Programming a robot
- Micro:bit – Coding a micro-chip
- HTML – Building a website with code
- Soundtrap – Making music
- Blender – 3D Virtual Modelling
The event is supported by Cork Institute of Technology, Institute of Technology Tralee, Calmast South East Technological University, Maynooth University, Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology, Dundalk Institute of Technology, Letterkenny Institute of Technology, Dún Laoghaire Institute of Art Design and Technology, Offaly County Council and is funded by the Higher Education Authority of Ireland.
Calmast director Sheila Donegan says that Calmast’s involvement in this initiative builds on the work the centre does with introducing children to science, technology, engineering and maths. “Over the years many children who came to Calmast’s events have gone on to study STEM at third level and are now working as scientists and engineers in the many pharma and tech industries in the region. It is really important to introduce STEM to children at a young age, to develop their curiosity and to foster in them a sense of enquiry, which can help them develop into the coders, scientists and engineers of the future.”
