Thanks to the relationship built up between the two organisations, the south east region, which has many historical links with Georgia, will continue to see a flow of US students who travel to SETU to study, engage in research, in addition to engaging in a range of cultural activities.
Progression
WIT President, Prof Willie Donnelly, welcomed the signing of the MOU. “The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with the entire Technical College System of Georgia is of significant importance in further developing and expanding the existing relationships: indeed, it elevates it to an entirely new level. It will create opportunities for staff mobility, joint teaching, research development and, particularly, it will allow students from TCSG come to SETU where they can gain an internationally recognised qualification through offering them Pathways for Progression in their chosen field of study,” he said.
Gretchen Corbin, Commissioner of the Technical College System of Georgia stated: "Signing this MOU formalises our longstanding relationship with South East Technological University and establishes a broad framework to expand our collaboration. This partnership is an outstanding opportunity for our students to train on an international level and then bring those skills to bear at companies here in Georgia."
Consul General of Ireland, Mr Shane Stephens said he was delighted to attend the signing of the ground breaking Memorandum of Understanding between South East Technological University and the entire Technical College System of Georgia.
“Our institutes of technology have been central to Ireland’s economic success story, an essential player in producing industry-ready talent. I am also fully conscious of the important role that SETU have played in contributing to the successes of certain investors from the South East of the U.S. into the South East of Ireland.
“By advancing collaboration, this new Memorandum of Understanding will aid both SETU and its numerous technical college partners in Georgia in their work to realise the full the potential of all their students,” Stephens continued.
South East relationship
The signing of this MOU is the culmination of a long process, involving detailed discussions, many meetings and visits by delegations of senior staff from both sides.
It cements the relationship between the South East of Ireland’s largest higher education institution and the Technical College System of Georgia with approx. 150,000 students across 22 higher education institutions.
WIT was represented by President, Prof Willie Donnelly; Head of International Relations, Sinead Day; and Head of North American Development, Walter O’Leary.
