Third year Bachelor in Business in Recreation and Sport Management student Siobhan is from Slieverue, Co Kilkenny and a past pupil of Abbey Community College, Ferrybank, Waterford.

About me:

I was part of the Peer to Peer programe in second year and mentored the first year students, in third year I became a Senior Mentor for the programe. I was also nominated for student of the year this past year.

What words of advice do you have for new students?

Have fun and do not be discouraged if you do not think the course you're in is not for you, the right course is there for you. I did two years of Business and Irish and knew it was not for me so decided to do Recreation and Sport Management instead, it was a good choice for me and enjoy the course. Don’t be afraid to ask questions to anyone including lecturers and staff.

What have been the highlights of your college experience?

I really enjoyed my work placement and being able to experience different things within my course like guest speakers and field trips to the AVIVA and Croke Park. I also got to get many different certificates and qualifications.

What did you like about Waterford as a city to live in/to study in?

I have always lived in Waterford and WIT was my first option for college because it was close enough to commute to.

How did this Peer2Peer add to your college experience?

Being a senior mentor as part of the Peer to Peer programe was very rewarding and I would definitely recommend the module to others. Work placement was very beneficial to me as I got to work in an environment I would not have had the opportunity to otherwise.

Anything you'd like to add

Recreation and Sport Management is a good course for someone who is unsure of what they would like to do in the future. RecMan is a course that can lead to almost any avenue you could want and is not necessarily just for people who are in to sport, you could like to watch sport or partake in sport and this course would be interesting for you.
