I wanted to study Exercise and Health Studies at SETU because:
WIT was my first choice; I had visited on an open day and was lucky enough to try out what a practical class would look like in the SETU Arena’s high-performance lab. From that point on I knew that the exercise and health industry would suit me. An engaging applied environment with smaller class sizes is defiantly what drew me in.
Some of the highlights of my college experience at SETU include:
Asides from profusely enjoying my course, my favourite experiences of college were the social aspects of it. Not only making friends in my own course but branching out to meet people with entirely different interests to me. Being a Peer 2 Peer mentor has been a lovely experience knowing that you have the opportunity to help others and it has given me access to so much helpful real-world advice I may not have otherwise learnt. Retrospectively, I can see that the most memorable times were when I was surrounded by friends I love, whether that was in the student’s union or dancing the night away at the Sports Ball.
Work placement participation benefited my college experience in the following way:
My work placement at the Sports Fitness Academy and Evolve health and fitness gym was an amazing experience. I learnt so much of behind the scenes of how to set up and run your own business. Extremely valuable lessons I learnt there could not have been gotten from a book. It taught me to run with my ideas although it can be scary. To strive high and one day I may have my own business.
Why I would recommend studying in Waterford/WIT:
Exercise and Health Studies is an excellent course to choose if you are unsure what specific avenue you want to work in down the line, yet you enjoy the exercise/health world. The job opportunities are vast with the third-year work placement being highly beneficial to get an idea of what interests you.
My advice for anyone considering the Exercise and Health Studies course is:
Get as involved as you can, and hard work does pay off (as cliché as it sounds). There are endless opportunities in SETU when you start looking. Clubs and societies are a brilliant way to make friends and pick up something you never have tried before. Not only are you making friends but networking and making valuable contacts that will help you jumpstart your career.
Through SETU I gained summertime employment consisting of teaching sports in summer camps for Italian and Spanish students visiting Ireland. This really added to my enjoyment during college and enhanced my understanding of the working world.
This is my fourth year being a class representative, it has strengthened my rapport with classmates and lecturers and heightening my ability of correspondence which has been beneficial when job hunting.
