Asylum seekers to share cookery skills with Waterford culinary students

Over four days culinary students at WIT will get to see a number of dishes from Algeria, West Africa, Albania and Afghanistan being prepared

As part of a celebration of world cuisine in association with the City of Sanctuary, Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) is to host a ‘November Series’ of food demonstrations to showcase intercultural food preparation and sharing from various regions.

Over Monday 26-Thursday 29 November 2018 culinary students at WIT will get to see a number of dishes from Algeria, West Africa, Albania and Afghanistan being prepared.

“All of the demonstrators are asylum seekers who love cooking and wish to share their dishes with us. This is an opportunity for our students to see and learn first-hand about the preparation of these traditional dishes,” said Head of the Department of Languages, Tourism and Hospitality at WIT, Ray Cullen.

Cullen organised for the ingredients to be ordered in, and each day for four days a dish will be prepared in front of students. Food tasting will be part of the demo.

Following on from this Higher Cert in Culinary Arts year 2 students will join the group for a special evening event at the end of January.
