A music concert held at Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) in December has raised close to €800 to help local families.

The annual Christmas concert which took place on Thursday 1st December at 7 pm in the College Street Chapel was free of charge with donations accepted in aid of Focus Ireland.

Music students involved in the event recently handed over a cheque to Focus Ireland.

Margaret Coleman, Regional Fundraising Coordinator Focus Ireland commented on the support from WIT music students. “We are so grateful that they continue to support us through their Christmas concert. Focus Ireland wouldn’t be able to provide the large range of services it currently does in Waterford - from Childcare to Advice and Information to Long term housing – if it wasn’t for the generosity of local groups that put their time and energy into fundraising for us. The students’ contribution to Focus Ireland goes directly to our frontline services, to the families and individuals that need it the most.”

Students at WIT’s music school and undergraduate students on the music degree showcased their talent, performing a wide-ranging programme from Tchaikovsky to a gypsy jazz arrangement of ‘Pure Imagination’ in tribute to Gene Wilder’s Willy Wonka. There were also performances from the WIT orchestra and ensembles, including traditional, guitar, jazz and the chamber choir.

The concert is organised, promoted and performed by the BA (Honours) Music students.
