Niamh felt touristy Waterford was the ideal place to study tourism

Humanities

"I would definitely recommend this course to someone. It was really enjoyable and I learned so much."

Learning about Irish history and the Irish language, as well as excursions to tourist attractions in Ireland made the course enjoyable for Niamh

Niamh McCarthy-Griffin from Wicklow is a graduate of the Higher Cert in Business in Tourism and has progressed into the BA (Hons) in Tourism Marketing.

Why did you choose your course?

I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do after the Leaving Cert. I saw this course, and I was interested in tourism. I picked the tourism and business side.

What was your favourite part of your course?

I loved learning about Irish history and the language. It was really interesting, our lecturers brought us on tours of Kilkenny castle and places I never would have seen on my own.

Did you do work placement?

We had placement during the summer between our first year and second year. I did my placement in a hotel in Laragh in Wicklow so I worked on the reception and did waitressing. It was great.

What advice would you give to somebody thinking about your course?

I would definitely recommend this course to someone. I was really enjoyable and I learned so much. I didn’t think that I would learn the things that I did. My advice would be to stick with everything, it can get tedious at times but it is really enjoyable.

Why did you choose to come to WIT?

There are not a lot of colleges that offer tourism as a course. Waterford is a touristy place in the city. So I decided to try Waterford. I have lived in Waterford for the last three years.

What are you doing now?

Once you complete the higher cert you can transfer into the second year of BA Tourism Marketing. So I continued on with tourism and started back in September.

What stands out for you about your experience at WIT?

Probably how nice everyone is, it is a really close college, everybody knows everyone, the lecturers are lovely, and the courses are nice. It is just a nice atmosphere all around all the time.
