Earlier this month, the annual WIT School of Business staff/student charity soccer tournament raised €545 in aid of the Neo Natal Unit at University Hospital Waterford and the tournament, first run in 2005, has raised significant funds for this extremely worthy cause over the years. The cheque for €545 will be presented to the Neo Natal Unit in the coming weeks.
The tournament was held in Kingfisher Fitness Club and involved teams from the BA (Hons) in Accounting and BA (Hons) in Finance and Investment programmes, as well as a team of lecturers from the School of Business. The winners were the team from BA (Hons) in Finance and Investment Year 1 who narrowly defeated the Lecturers 2-1 in the final.
Commenting at the event, Richard Burke who co-organised the tournament said, “I look forward to this event every year. Not only are we raising money for a great cause, but it also develops a deep sense of spirit and camaraderie amongst students and lecturers.”
Lei Shi, a student on the BA in Finance and Investment Year 2 programme, said, “This was a lot of fun. It is good to be involved in a team with my classmates and to be involved in this charity event with course leaders and lecturers. I’m looking forward already to next year.”
Paul Treacy, co-organiser and course leader on the BA (Hons) in Accounting programme commented that “It is fantastic to see both staff and students coming together once again to raise funds for such a worthy cause. The event has become a very important part of the WIT calendar.”
Planning has already begun for the 2016 event and if anyone would like to donate or get involved in the organisation please contact Richard Burke ([email protected]), Paul Treacy ([email protected]) or Gerard Arthurs ([email protected]).
