TSSG's James Clarke elected to technology platform that gives European Commission regular updates to its strategic research and innovation agenda

The Strategic EU Liaison Manager at Waterford Institute of Technology’s Telecommunications Software and Systems Group (TSSG) James Clarke was elected to the New European Media (NEM) Steering Board at its recent General Assembly.

The NEM Technology Platform (NEM ETP) is one of the official Technology Platforms of the European Union’s Horizon 2020 (H2020) Research and Innovation programme. A primary goal of the EU technology platforms, is to provide the European Commission with regular updates to its Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA), which are then translated into content for future work programs for the H2020 program.

Being on the steering board of a technology platform enables WIT to be on an inside track to providing their key topics for inclusion into the SRIA in relation to topics related to content creation, digital media, and other core topics covered by the NEM platform.

The NEM ETP aims at building sustainable European leadership in content, media, and the creative industries, pursuing its objective to promote an innovative European approach to convergent Media, Content and Creativity towards a Future Media Internet that will enhance the lives of European citizens through a richer media experience. The key stakeholders in the NEM ETP include broadcasters, telecom operators, manufacturers of professional equipment, and manufacturers of consumer electronics, academia, and standardisation bodies.

Although a primarily industry driven platform, there are a number of dedicated seats on the steering board for Academic and Research institutions and Clarke has been elected to one of these seats for a third consecutive term since 2010.
