Victory Scholarship allowed Alyssa to study internationally, work within the youth community in Waterford, continue to play basketball, and make lasting friendships
Alyssa Velles travelled from her small town of Franklin Connecticut in America to WIT to study the Masters of Business as part of the Sport Changes Life program which allows American students come over and play with the college team and national league/women’s super league team each year.
Alyssa is a past pupil of Norwich Free Academy in Connecticut (USA) and a graduate of Saint Peter’s University in New Jersey (USA 2014-2018).
She represented WIT in women’s basketball. The women’s basketball team had a good run in playoffs coming up short in a loss to Maynooth in the league finals. The team went on to play at varsities in Dublin representing WIT in the B division. The team fought hard before losing in the semi-final match to UCD.
Alyssa was nominated as WIT Sports Star of the Week in December 2018 after a 41 point scoring game in a victory over LIT. She was also nominated for WIT Vikings Sports Star of the Year.
Outside of WIT, she was active in the youth community inspiring children through the game of basketball. Alyssa worked with the Waterford Wildcats underage teams throughout the week and the young mini ballers every Saturday. She was also a member of the Waterford Wildcats Super League basketball team.
Alyssa is very grateful for the WIT Sports Scholarship. The Scholarship allowed her to study internationally, work within the youth community in Waterford, continue to play basketball, and make lasting friendships.
Alyssa explains why she applied for the sport scholarship at WIT: “I applied for the sport scholarship because I thought I would be a great fit for the programme and make an impact in the Vikings Sports community. I really enjoyed studying the Master’s of Business at WIT and thought traveling to Belgium as a class was an unforgettable experience.”
Her dreams for the future are to open a multi-sport facility in her home state in America and provide a safe place for the youth to play the sports they love.
