From Piltown Co Kilkenny, Shane Byrne was a student in De La Salle College, Waterford City before attending WIT to complete his studies in the School of Engineering.

Before completing the MSc in Sustainable Energy Engineering (part time) in 2020, I undertook the Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) degree in the same discipline, graduating in 2016 from WIT.
My motivation for doing the Master's in Sustainable Energy Engineering programme was:
From an early age, I always had a keen interest in engineering and watching documentaries such as Danny Forster's "Extreme Engineering" solidified my decision to pursue it. After researching multiple masters programs all over Ireland, I found that the course offered by WIT was the perfect fit for me.
My primary motivational factor for pursing this programme was to ultimately complement my existing knowledge in the field of sustainability, energy reduction, carbon reduction and energy efficient heat and power generation technologies. It is also comprised of fantastic modules surrounding climate change which I believe to be fundamental for sustainability or energy engineers to be exposed too. Also, having a level 9 qualification in this sector allows for huge career opportunities for graduates, as the push for global carbon neutrality is growing over the next 30 years.
The Master's in Sustainable Energy Engineering programme has impacted my career in the following way:
Undertaking this programme has impacted positively on my professional career in multiple ways. My current role is responsible for a diverse range of both environmental and sustainability related projects. Apart for the technical knowledge advantage, this qualification has also given me a stronger skill set in key areas such as work-life balance, project management, team work and leadership. Reflecting back on the experience, I have no doubt that the course contributed to many aspects of my professional, academic and personal growth.

My advice for anyone considering this programme is to go for it! It's a fantastic course and exceptionally well run. All the lecturers involved are extremely knowledgeable and approachable which makes this programme such a success.
I undertook this programme part time while working full time in an extremely busy environment. Also, having two young kids under the age of three when I started made the process that little bit more interesting to say the least! I believe that by getting the balance right between work, family and education was absolutely key for me achieving my overall goal of a first class honours.
Why I would recommend studying in Waterford/WIT:
After studying in WIT for 6 years, I would highly recommend anyone who wishes to get excellent education, experience and utilisation of fantastic facilities to study in WIT.
