Staff and students from the Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering course travelled overseas to experience a number of educational field trips
Students from the Engineering Society at Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) organised an educational trip to Germany where they were given a plant tour of the BMW bike manufacturing factory and the Volkswagen plant.
Organisation
Two students, Lee Cogley and Martin Gilbert from the BSc (Hons) in Manufacturing Engineering organised the tour in its entirety and were accompanied by a number of students and lecturers.
The trip
The visit consisted of a tour of the BMW bike manufacturing facility in Juilustrum, Berlin as well as a visit to the Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg.
Students from the BEng in Manufacturing Engineering degree, Nigel Curran and Daniel Hutchinson commented on their experience, dubbing it a “fantastic college trip.”
“We were given a full factory tour on their unique electric Volkswagen train showing us various areas. We got to see areas such as Manufacturing, Production/Assembly and Final testing stages for the Golf, Golf SV, Touran and Tiguan. Anyone interested in having a future career in engineering would enjoy this course as it gives the students great hands on experience and insight into manufacturing in Ireland and worldwide.”
First-hand opportunity
Course Leader in the part time manufacturing degrees at WIT, Ned Cullinan said, “The Engineering Society have travelled on a number of international trips in the past including visits to the BMW car plant in Munich, Peugeot in Paris, Opel in Russelheim, Volvo in Gothenburg and Jaguar in the UK. These are always exciting action-packed tours which give the students a first-hand opportunity to gain a valuable insight into large scale, world class manufacturing facilities.”
