Waterford Institute of technology (WIT) offers the only MSc (Level 9) programmes in Construction Project Management and Sustainable Energy Engineering that meet the education standard for the professional title of ‘Chartered Engineer’ giving graduates of both courses a considerable advantage entering a competitive jobs market.
Engineers Ireland (EI), the professional institution representing the engineering profession in Ireland, has recently accredited the Master of Science in Sustainable Energy Engineering and the Master of Science in Construction Project Management in the Department of the Built Environment at the Institute.
Tom Rochford, who currently works in the Middle East for BAM Contractors and completed the MSc in Construction Project Management in 2014 says, “Holding an MSc from an accredited course such as the MSc in Construction Project Management is essential in the global workplace. The EI Chartered Engineer status is recognised across the world and employers are increasingly encouraging their workforce to achieve this status as they promote their business at home and abroad. The MSc provides an important element of achieving this title.”
According to Derek Sinnott, Head of the Department of the Built Environment in WIT, “We are delighted to have both masters’ programmes in the department accredited by EI. It gives our graduates a real advantage, particularly with the introduction of the certification requirements in the new Building Control (Amendment) Regulations. What this means is that only professional Chartered Engineers can certify building works and our graduates, when they complete the second phase of accreditation, will be part of that elite group.”
In line with international trends in professional institutions, the educational standard of a Chartered Engineer has increased significantly and only graduates of an accredited Level 9 masters programme in an appropriate discipline can apply for the Chartered Engineer status.
According to Engineers Ireland, which is empowered to define and protect the use of the registered professional title of Chartered Engineer, the benefits of becoming a Chartered Engineer are significant, “Chartered Engineers achieve the badge of excellence for their profession; establish a seal of approval from peers for knowledge and competence; are more employable; are more responsible for their work; have a competitive advantage through international recognition and are respected as a professional.”
Level 8 courses in the Department of the Built Environment at WIT are also accredited up to MIEI level, which, along with the MSc, are a necessary stepping stones towards completing the educational requirements leading to Chartered Engineer status.
