Transcending Annihilation is the title of an exhibition featuring six very talented emerging artists across a range of disciplines from the WIT Visual Art class of 2020.
The exhibition is taking place at GOMA Gallery of Modern Art in Waterford and runs from Thursday, 10 December to 16 January 2021 (12.30 - 5.30pm).
Student artists
Artists exhibiting are Lisa Comerford, Susie Kelly, Karra Peters, Roberta Sarni, Milana Ziedelyte and Marika Manning.
Each year Waterford gallery works with colleges throughout Ireland to offer recent graduate supports. When due to Covid-19, graduates of Waterford Institute of Technology 2020 class lost an opportunity to physically exhibit their work in what would be their final year degree show, GOMA’s Director Jenna Whelan contacted the college to offer students a curated exhibition for late December when restrictions lifted.
Creativity and cross-pollination
Showcasing an array of creativity and ingenuity across multiple artistic disciplines, the diversity of practice on show is combined with a variety of methodologies.
“Transcending is often a word used by artists of something that happens in the art making process, it is related to inner experience which makes it a powerful contribution to the creative process. The underlying motivation to making work in a socio-political framework or any context is life experiences or the development of self-realisation,” says Whelan.
“The idea and title of the exhibition came from extracting or cross-pollinating common themes or threads already existing within the students practice and employing it to the current crisis. An area of common concern or interest began to surface, the exploration of transcending annihilation conducted within a socio-political framework informed by the student’s practice, aiming to reconnect it to the current context,” Whelan adds.
