Garter Lane Arts Centre Theatre, O'Connell Street, Waterford is the venue on Thursday, 22 November, 2018 for the Creative Identities Symposium which supports the development of local enterprise, Waterford Cultural Quarter and the related Design Challenge research project
Running from 7pm-9pm the free event (booking required) is targeted at the design and business community, schools and transition year students as well as students in disciplines such as Design, Architecture, Multimedia, Business and Tourism.
Panellist of speakers
The facilitator is Dr. Brendan Jennings, Principal Investigator at the SFI CONNECT centre, WIT. Panellists include: Richard Seabrooke, Executive Creative Director, The Tenth Man, Dr. Richard Hayes, Vice- President of Strategy, WIT, Dr. Paul Mc Cann, Chairman, CEO, CDG, Vanessa Fay, Design Lead, Epsilon Dublin, Brian McGee, Design and Crafts Council of Ireland (DCCoI).
Creative Identities Symposium was developed by the Creativity and Culture Research Group, (CCRG), at Waterford Institute of Technology, (WIT), in partnership with Waterford Local Enterprise Office and Garter Lane Arts Centre. It is supported by project partners Waterford City and County Council, Fáilte Ireland, the Institute of Designers in Ireland, (IDI), the Design and Crafts Council of Ireland (DCCoI), Institute of Creative Advertising and Design, (ICAD), and Creative Ireland.
Public forum on the pivotal role of design
One of the organisers, Joy Rooney, Lecturer and Researcher in Design at WIT, said that “WIT Creativity and Culture Research Group (CCRG), together with project partners, are delighted to provide a public forum to help explore culture as a dynamic force and the pivotal role design plays in helping express, suppress or empower that force within a city’s sense of identity. ”
Síle Penkert, Executive Director, Garter Lane Arts Centre, noted “Garter Lane Arts Centre is delighted to be a platform for informed discussion that can play an active role in the enhancement of our surroundings and our lives.”
The event will have an engaging, entertaining and inspiring panel of speakers - all experts in their area of practice or research. The event will give attendees a chance to explore new ideas about the role creativity plays in meeting urban challenges and how a sense of cultural identity manifests itself in an urban centre.
