Lucas says Waterford is a great city to live because buses go everywhere within the city and it's easy to travel around Ireland and to Dublin airport
Name Lucas Cherubim Bortoleto
Course title Msc in Innovative Technology Engineering
Hometown Piracicaba/SP, Brazi. Piracicaba is in the country side of São Paulo. We are considered a small city, however, we are almost 400,000 people. Almost ten times bigger than Waterford. Piracicaba is a city that has a lot of industries and may be similar to Waterford.
For me, the biggest difference is the weather. Almost all days are sunny days and above 20ºC. Waterford is a great city to live because there are buses to go everywhere within the city and to travel around Ireland, specially to go to Dublin and Dublin airport is really easy. In addition, the city is well structured, with good supermarkets, pharmacies and shops. A bike is extremely useful, because due the small distances, you can go everywhere without a car.
Course choice As a student of the first class of Brazil's Manufacturing Engineering degree, I believe a Master Degree it is a great opportunity to develop more the expertise of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering area. I think the Master in Innovative Technology Engineering fits perfectly in the context that I hope to develop into my professional career, because it is an opportunity to learn, study and investigate more about the tools learned during my undergraduate studies and my professional experience. In addition, the Manufacturing field is growing every day because of the competition between companies in the market, where only the efficient industries will survive and achieve their goals. Thus, the Master Degree is a chance to generate optimal job opportunities.
Study path I’m graduated in Manufacturing Engineering at the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP). In addition, I realized different exchanges. Academic Exchange at University of Algarve (Portugal) from January/2012 to July/2012. After, an English course at ILSC in Toronto - Canada from January/2013 to March / 2013, and finally an Academic Exchange under the “Science without Borders” Brazilian Program in Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (Ireland) from September/2013 to May/2014.
How did you end up in WIT? I read the news about the scholarship from the IOTI – Institutes of Technology Ireland for Brazilian students. Then, I started to look for Master degrees in Ireland and found the Msc in Innovative Technology Engineering really interesting because it is the postgrad of Manufacturing Engineering in WIT. The attention from the International Office was fundamental to proceed with my application.
Extracurricular activities I believe that sports are the best way to enjoy my spare time. During my spare time I usually run with some friends or play tennis. In order to play tennis in Waterford I became a member at St. Annes Tennis Club. The staff and members at St. Annes are really polite and respectful. There, I enjoy my weekends and evenings playing tennis with Irish people. It is a great time because I enjoy a lot there and great opportunity for my social network.
What are your recommendations to future visiting scholars I’m living at Riverwalk student accommodation. The facilities there are really good and all rooms are ensuite bedrooms. The location is good because it is closer to supermarkets and just 10min walking from the city centre. Another advantage is to be in touch with other international students. However, the disadvantage is that you have to pay for laundry because the apartments do not have a washing machine.
Career focus I think the Masters in Innovative Technology Engineering fits perfectly in the context that I hope to develop into my professional career, because it is an opportunity to learn, study and investigate more about the tools learned during my undergraduate studies and my professional experience. In addition, the Manufacturing field is growing every day because of the competition between companies in the market, where only the efficient industries will survive and achieve their goals. Thus, the Master Degree is a chance to generate optimal job opportunities in Ireland and over Europe.
