Jim Martin Commercial Director with BAM Contractors recently presented BSc (Hons) in Quantity Surveying students Kelly Byrne from Dublin and Ian Crowley from Waterford with the BAM Contractors Award. The award recognises outstanding achievements of the two outstanding students for their final year dissertations.
Presenting the awards Jim Martin commented at the ceremony, “BAM Contractors are very proud to be associated with WIT and this new award. The recent SCSI Construction Sector Outlook 2104 predicts a 30% increase in total output of the building and construction sector by 2018. Key to embracing this demand is to entice and develop new construction professionals".
Derek Sinnott, Head of the Department of the Built Environment said “the department would like to acknowledge the support of BAM Contractors with whom we have a long standing relationship. In particular we would like to thank Jim Martin and Adrienne Bryan. Their support will help promote excellence in Quantity Surveying and highlight the need for good quality graduates to meet the growing demand of industry into the future”.
The Quantity Surveying course at Waterford Institute of Technology is a 4 year level 8 degree and has been designed to produce graduates who can successfully operate as professional quantity surveyors/costs consultants in the future Irish and global construction industry. The recent SCSI Employment Opportunities and Skills Requirements: 2014 – 2018 Report, predicts a growth in employment for Quantity Surveyors to 2018 of 506, whilst graduate output over the same period will be 408. A big challenge for the industry is now to fill the shortage of new entrants coming into the profession in the coming years.
BAM Contractors covers the entire spectrum of construction in Ireland and ranks in the top 5 of major Irish construction companies. BAM Contractors is a wholly owned subsidiary of Royal BAM Group of the Netherlands and is one of Europe's largest building and civil engineering contractors.
