Following an honours degree in pharmaceutical science Seán embarked on a postgraduate degree funded by local pharmaceutical company TEVA Pharmaceuticals
"Initially, I began my science career in 2010 by enrolling in the BSc (Hons) in Pharmaceutical Science at WIT. Primarily, I found the modules daunting at first as I had no previous chemistry or physics knowledge from Leaving Certificate as I only studied Biology.
New-found interest in chemistry
However, the lectures and practical classes made the material easy to grasp and I found a new interest in Chemistry. The lectures and practical classes are second to none and the lecturers goes above their duties to help each student reach their goals.
In 2013 I was given the opportunity to work as a Development Chemist for Bausch & Lomb for seven months as part of the accredited work experience module for the course. The skills and knowledge gained from the practical work and the lecturers made the transition to the pharmaceutical industry seamless and the experience I have gained was immeasurable to date. In 2014 I completed my research project in Organic Chemistry and graduated in 2014, overall I found the course enjoyable and the skills gained from the course has helped my professional development to date where the research element in the final year spurred me to continue my studies.
Industry-funded postgraduate degree
Upon graduating, I applied for an industry funded postgraduate degree funded by local pharmaceutical company TEVA Pharmaceuticals, under the supervision of Dr Helen Fox and Dr Peter McLoughlin and began my studies in October 2014 in WIT. Being both industry and academically supervised gave great insight into how collaboration of both industry and academia can solve real world problems encountered by industry.
My research project involved examining the impact micronisation plays on the physical properties of a novel inhalable API. In August 2018, I underwent my viva voce examination where I was awarded my doctoral degree and graduated in October 2018. I’m currently a staff member in the department of science with the aim of branching further out into inhalations research."
