Shane O’Neill, who completed his BSc (Hons) in Construction Management & Engineering degree at the Institute this summer, was recently featured in the Irish Independent’s ‘Going to College’ supplement.
Building a bright future, Shane goes on to do masters
Shane O'Neill reckons he has turned down at least 15-20 job offers since completing his degree this summer. It shows how the employment scene for construction graduates has bounced back into life, but Shane has decided that he wants to nail his masters first.
It was the lucrative opportunities presented by the construction industry before the 2008 crash that lured Shane to civil engineering at Waterford IT, a three year Level 7 degree.
The lack of jobs when he graduated got him thinking about topping it off with a Level 8 in construction management, also at Waterford IT. With his Level 7 qualification, Shane walked straight into year three of the four year programme.
The course has strong links with leading architectural, engineering and construction firms, which led to Shane getting a placement with Murphy Pipelines in the UK. He believes this work experience, which he has highlighted on his LinkedIn social media page, played a big role in the flood of job recent offers.
The 23-year-old from Waterford, living in south Kilkenny, is due to start his masters, in construction project management, also in Waterford IT, in the autumn.
