Law Students at WIT enjoyed engaging with members of the Supreme Court on Tuesday, 25 February 2020. Students from F.C.J. Bunclody, Tullow Community School, Presentation Secondary School Waterford, Newtown College Waterford, Ard Scoil na nDéise Dungarvan and Coláiste Bríde Enniscorthy also attended. The event was organised in conjunction with the Office of the Chief Justice to mark the historic occasion of the Supreme Court’s first sitting in Waterford this week.

Mr. Justice John Mac Menamin delivered a key note address on “The Independence of Judges in Modern Constitutional Democracies and the Rule of Law”. This was followed by break-out sessions with Ms. Justice Iseult O’Malley, Mr. Justice Peter Charleton and Ms. Justice Elizabeth Dunne and student groups.

On behalf of Chief Justice Frank Clarke, an invitation was extended to the Law Faculty to nominate one student for the Chief Justice’s Summer Placement Programme.

Participants in this programme are assigned to a Judge of the Superior Courts and will have the opportunity to observe court proceedings, attend the Hardiman Lecture Series and undertake visits to the Criminal Courts of Justice and the Drug Treatment Court. Students at WIT were very excited to learn of this invitation and competition for this prestigious internship will no doubt be intense.
