The Dairy Master Student Award recognises the achievements of BSc (Hons) in Agricultural Science degree students with the best final year project presentations
Mark Reidy, a past pupil of Cólaiste Chiarain, Croom, Co. Limerick is one of 2 students at WIT to be awarded as a winner of the Dairy Master Student Award which took place on the 22 May 2019. The awards were presented by Niall O’Hanlon and Pat Hernan from Dairymaster.
Mark is in his final year of Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Agricultural Science course.
Project
Mark was nominated for the DairyMaster student award for his work on his final year project which was 'A comparison of computerised calf feeding systems to the conventional once and twice a day feeding systems in relation to calf health, calf performance and farm labour.
Mark was born and raised on a dairy farm which places great emphasis on calf rearing which gave him the idea for the project. If Mark decides to go Dairy farming he may have to tackle one of the industries greatest issues which is the labour shortage. Mark wanted to investigate whether or not computerised calf feeding systems are a feasible substitute for the once and twice a day systems which have a long-standing reputation for successful calf rearing.
''I'm ecstatic and delighted about receiving this award and I would like to thank my supervisor Martin Raftice in Kildalton College and DairyMaster who have done so much for us at WIT'' said Mark.
Like many other students, Mark is still unsure of what career path to choose but said it will definitely be within the agricultural sector.
Dairymaster “Dairymaster Student Award” 2019
The award recognises the achievements of BSc (Hons) in Agricultural Science degree students with the best final year project presentations. The 2019 winners were Leanne Connell and Mark Reidy. The award helps students realise the relevance of their final year projects to a world beyond college. The bursary is very welcome in helping our students make the transition to the workplace following their studies. It also gives them an opportunity to excel and showcase their research to industry.
