Thomas was always interested in design from an early age and decided on architecture as it gives him the skills and abilities to better the environment
Thomas Connolly is a current student of the Bachelor of Architecture (Honours) degree at WIT and is from Co Kildare and a past student of Colaiste Chiarain, Leixlip, County Kildare
I wanted to study Bachelor of Architecture (Honours) at WIT because:
I have always wanted to do something involving design. I remember finding it very appealing that by becoming an architect it gave you the ability and skills to physically reshape your environment for the better.
Some of the highlights of my college experience at WIT include:
I have had a lot of great experiences at WIT, but overall, the most enjoyable would have to be working every day in the Granary Building. There’s something about being in a studio all day with your classmates, all working together on the same projects that I feel most courses miss out on. Although the course work may be difficult at times, this constant exposure to design and creativity in the studio makes it a very enjoyable process.
Erasmus participation benefited my college experience in the following way:
I spent my fifth semester studying in Milan, Italy. I believe these months abroad have given me a deeper and wider understanding of how we experience architecture. This new perspective, paired with my already established idea of design has given me a clear increase in confidence when it comes to architectural decision making. Experiencing a culture so different from our own was so valuable and I can’t recommend the Erasmus programme enough.
Why I would recommend studying in Waterford/WIT:
An important aspect of studying architecture is having an understanding of how people interact with buildings. Considering the architecture department is placed right in the middle of Waterford City, you are immediately exposed to all this life which will certainly benefit you as a designer. Another advantage to studying architecture at WIT is the smaller class sizes which allow for a closer relationship between lecturers and students.
My advice for anyone considering the Bachelor of Architecture (Honours) course is:
It’s not going to be an easy course and there will be many difficult times but it’s those moments that end up being the most enjoyable and rewarding.
