MSc in Sustainable Energy Engineering programme visit West Pharma in Waterford
On 8 February students and lecturers on the MSc in Sustainable Energy Engineering programme were welcomed to the newly developed West pharma plant at Carrickpherish by Mr Harold Duane Engineering Manager at 'West' Waterford. Harold along with his collegues Mr Niall Sheridan, Wests' Global Facility Engineer and Mr Paul Dempsey West Waterford Plants' Facilities Manager gave a very insightful talk on the Engineering led design of this €120m plant and the considerations that went into its development from what was a blank slate for the company (being the first and largest of its kind in the group to be built on a greenfield site). The current development is the first of five phases (all of equal size to the current) and West took the students through the masterplanning considerations that went into the capital spend and life cycle costing of the facility and how this informed decisions on heat, power, electricity supply, boiler sizing and location, HVAC, redundancy of service / service interruption etc that proved to be a fantastic real world application of the theories taught in the Facilities Management module of our MSc in Sustainable Energy Engineering here at WIT. The Lecturers on the programme extend their thanks to West for providing their time to the programme for this visit.
