Growth Hub is part of the WIT entrepreneurship eco-system; students in Waterford can be inspired, explore ideas, identify next steps and access advice and supports

Current and future Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) students are to benefit from new supports and a space to help grow students’ business and social enterprise ideas.

Growth Hub which was established at WIT in 2021, thanks to Government funding, has opened its doors on the ground floor of the School of Business building on the main Waterford campus.

Contact point for students

Entrepreneurial students across the institute are welcome to call in or engage online. The Growth Hub website growthhub.wit.ie contains information on upcoming events, useful resources and news for both staff and students. It is also on Instagram (@growthhubwit).

The aim of Growth Hub is to motivate, support and develop student entrepreneurial potential across all WIT campuses, says Margaret Tynan, the Growth Hub Project Lead.

“We have students in WIT who are both studying and running their own business and we want to support them in managing and growing those businesses. We would love to speak to students about their ideas, to help them explore the potential of starting a new business,” she says.

Help on entrepreneurial journey

Growth Hub aims to help WIT students, from any discipline, on their entrepreneurial journey. Students who engage with Growth Hub will find a creative space, called the ‘Imaginarium’, where they can tease out entrepreneurial ideas, collaborate on work with students from other disciplines and learn from the experiences of a range of entrepreneurs in our region.

However, Growth Hub is not just for start-ups. “We are also conscious of our PhD students who may need assistance commercialising their research,” she adds.

Growth Hub embraces a wide range of perspectives on entrepreneurship including cultural, digital, health, food, social and agri-entrepreneurship, to name but a few.

Students can also avail of incredible opportunities to engage in social entrepreneurship, through initiatives such as Enactus.

Bursary scheme for staff

In addition, the Growth Hub supports academic staff through an entrepreneurship education bursary scheme. In 2021, five bursaries were awarded across the Schools of Humanities and Business.

Growth Hub is an important addition to the WIT entrepreneurship eco-system where students can be inspired, explore entrepreneurial ideas, identify next steps and access relevant advice and supports.

Growth Hub is a Higher Education Authority Human Capital Initiative, Pillar 3 collaborative project involving Technological University Dublin and WIT.
