Celebration of achievements and contributions of those involved in the promotion of science, technology, engineering and mathematics in Ireland
WIT lecturers, researchers and the directors of the institute's science, technology, engineering and maths outreach centre Calmast were among those who attended a reception at Áras an Uachtaráin on St Patrick's Day.
The President and Sabina Higgins held a reception on 17 March to celebrate the achievements and contributions of individuals and organisations in the promotion of the disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
A group involved in Calmast’s various STEM promotion activities from WIT were invited. In attendance were engineering lecturers Susan Gallagher and Jason Berry, researcher Cordula Weiss and CALMAST directors Sheila Donegan and Eoin Gill.
Since his inauguration in 2011, President Higgins has used many occasions to highlight the potential of science and scientific discoveries to find solutions to the world’s greatest problems, such as climate change, global hunger and environmental degradation. He is a regular visitor at the BT Young Scientist festival, and as former Minister for Arts, he has often highlighted the many links between science and creativity.
