The scholarship scheme, which had its first cohort in 2016, encourages and rewards young people who show a capacity to shape a better society
Seán Walsh, a past pupil of Mount Sion CBS, Waterford City, is one of five first year students at South East Technological University (WIT) to be awarded a President’s Scholarship.
The Bachelor of Business Studies (Hons) student outlined in his scholarship application how he had the potential to shape future society.
“I am involved in Irish Water Safety Waterford since 2010, currently voluntarily teaching water safety skills and lessons to children. I was involved in peer mentoring during my time in secondary school. I also represented the youth of Waterford for two years when I sat on the Waterford Comhairle na Nóg and when I was the youth ambassador for Waterford City.”
Seán explains why he applied for the President’s Scholarship: “I saw it as an opportunity to further motivate myself to become more active in the community and to be recognised for the work that I had done to date. I enjoy my course because of it’s broad range of modules and the fact that the lecturers are approachable.
The first year student says his dreams for the future include to work in the aviation finance industry and to continue to work within the community to make society a better place for all.
