Sport and Recreation Management
I graduated from WIT in 2012 with my undergraduate degree in Bachelor of Business in Sport and Recreation Management. On finishing my degree I undertook a role within WIT in the Clubs and Societies Office and later the Sports Campus.
In 2015 I decided to take a change in career and began working at State Street Ireland where I have been working in the Custody Client Services Department for the last 4 years. In June 2018 the opportunity arose to further my education in the form of a partnership between State Street (my employers) and WIT (the postgrad cert in Economics and Finance).
What attracted you to study at Waterford Institute of Technology?
The partnership between State Street and WIT was a fantastic opportunity for me to further my education. As a former student I already had positive experiences of WIT so it was a great opportunity. The information evening which was held to advise of the format of the course was very informative and really sold the opportunity to me to align my education with my career.
The reputation of the School of Business and the institute as a whole made it easy to make the decision to make to undertake the course.
What was your motivation for choosing this course?
The partnership developed between State Street and WIT was a fantastic opportunity for me to align my education with my career.
My degree being in Sport and Recreation Management is far removed from the Financial Services Industry which I find myself employed in, so the Post Grad Cert in Economics and Finance was a great fit for me to help develop my knowledge of the industry I work in. It was also a great opportunity to further add to my knowledge of the different aspects of the industry which I have dealings with on a day to day basis.
What have you done in life prior to studying here?
I studied in WIT from 2008 - 2012, then worked in the Sports Industry from 2012 to 2015 before moving to my current role in Financial Services in 2015.
What words of advice do you have for new students?
As a part time student who was trying to improve their knowledge of their industry, I would say take the plunge and take on the challenge of balancing work and education,
The support is there to help balance both and the work will be worth the effort put in at the end.
It was a challenge that I was reluctant to take on, but I definitely would recommend it, it is certainly daunting getting back into education after being away from it for 7 years but the lecturers are extremely helpful and will make the transition easier.
Did you participate in any of the following?
How did this add to your college experience?
There were guest speakers for one of our modules covering a huge variety of topics from Brexit to start-up companies. This was probably one of the most enjoyable modules we undertook, it was great for getting a feeling for different areas of business and it helped to hear real world stories.
How did you manage your work life study balance?
The work life balance was tough especially with working full time as well as studying, I think the most important thing is to plan things. Most importantly put aside time at weekends to complete assignments and study.
I also found my involvement in sport key to the work life balance, it is a good release from work and college life. Not everyone has sport but definitely past times are important as a release.
How has this course helped your career development?
This course has helped me massively with career development, my undergraduate degree is far removed from the career I am employed in. This course helped to get a great insight into the industry I work in and helped me to build a greater knowledge base.
