School of Engineering hosts fourth annual meet the graduates event

Engineering students learn from graduates experience as graduate engineers working across the south east discussed the realities of life after college

The annual 'Meet the Graduates' event took place during lunch time on Tuesday, 23 October as part of the BYTE initiative in the School of Engineering. BYTE is a School of Engineering initiative designed to help students succeed through mentored and peer support.

World of work

Current students had the opportunity to meet past graduates and employers to chat in an informal setting about the world of work in engineering.

Over 20 graduate engineers from a wide range of companies based in the South East kindly visited WIT. The fourth year of the event, students could learn from the graduates experience.

This event has proven very popular in previous years and this year was no exception. In a relaxed informal setting students discussed career options, job opportunities, salaries both in Ireland and overseas.

About BYTE

The School of Engineering in partnership with the Department of Student Life and Learning at Waterford Institute of Technology setup a new initiative called BYTE (Broadening Your Third-level Experience) in September 2015. BYTE was piloted in 2015/16 with Electronic Engineering students and expanded to include all Engineering disciplines in 2016/17.
The overall objectives of the initiative include attracting more students to engineering and retaining them through mentored and peer support. It involves all students, but is particularly focussed on 1st years as the 3rd level transition challenges are well known. BYTE helps new students feel like they belong in engineering. It also enables them to get to know and help each other in a fun and safe environment. 
The BYTE programme operates in addition to their core studies. Each week students are brought together for a BYTE timetabled session. The scheduled activities include: ‘finding your feet’, team building exercises, quizzes and ‘game of drones’; workshops on academic writing, critical thinking and exam preparation; presentations by graduates and employers. 
As well has helping with retention, BYTE offers students a set of tangible skills that will scaffold their learning experience at WIT and benefit them throughout their engineering career and life.
