My name is Sinéad Tobin and I am a graduate of WIT. I graduated this May after surviving a crazy final semester! While in WIT, I studied the BBS (Hons) with HR. I have recently started a Graduate programme in Auto Boland Jaguar Land Rover in Waterford along with four other graduates. I am currently working the Marketing & Sales department and I love every minute of it.
There is a great atmosphere in work and I lucky to be working in a job which I really enjoy and really excites me. The course in WIT along with my work placement in Bausch & Lomb really helped me prepare for this role. I am really looking forward to the next 15 months in JLR & I can’t wait to see all the projects I can to work on during my time.
What attracted you to study at Waterford Institute of Technology?
Initially, I had been drawn to some universities but after looking at the small class size and interactivity of WIT, I felt I could learn a lot more in that environment. I had heard a lot of positive feedback from the past students who had achieved great things from the course so from that I knew that this course would be a great opportunity to develop and grow. The work placement was a key factor also for me when deciding which college I would attend as I felt it was vital.
Did you always know this was the course you wanted to do?
I had a huge interest in business but was unsure of the area that I would like to work in, I found the opportunity in first and second year to explore the different areas was a great to explore and see what area appealed to me the most.
I always knew that I wanted to work in a fast pace environment which was constantly changing, I felt that by studying a business degree it would give me that knowledge which would help me to succeed in an environment like that..
What words of advice do you have for new students?
Get involved and get to know new people. At the start everyone is nervous and is more than happy to chat and make friends.
I found that some people didn't think ahead when choosing their course, it is important to do your research regarding your course as well as what opportunity will be available when you have completed it. You want to ensure that when you have completed your course you will be fully prepared for the working world and that is exactly what WIT gives you.
What have been the highlights of your college experience?
I found that work placement was a great experience and I found that as a graduate the importance of a good work placement when going for interviews. I learnt and developed so much whilst on placement, it’s a key area that all business students need the opportunity to experience.
The lecturers in WIT really make the students experience, particularly in the last semester which was very stressful to say the least, my lecturers went above and beyond to help us out. They were always there for me whether it was academic help or just someone who would listen to you about interview stress. A special mention to Anne Marie McGrath, Mick Rock, Patricia Bowe, Coireann O'Mahony Power & Marie O'Dwyer.

How did your experience at WIT help get you to where you are now?
Angela Collins was brilliant when on the job hunt, without Angela I probably wouldn't have even know about the graduate programme. I couldn't sing her praises high enough.
