Adrian Brennan from Portlaoise studied Criminal Justice Studies in South East Technological University and since graduating has begun a post graduate course in UCD.
What attracted you to study at South East Technological University?
I chose it because of the cert, the higher cert in Legal Studies that you could start out at level 6 and I’ve always been a guy that works his way through, I didn’t want to not like it initially so I said I would start at level 6 and go up and as I progressed to level 8 I really thought it was a great decision to go with the higher cert in the first place.
What stood out to you most while studying at South East Technological University?
Just everybody and everything. It’s tight knit, especially down in College Street, everybody knew one another and that was extremely helpful, classes were by definition smaller, so you could ask more questions you were less afraid to ask questions and even the lecturers were very helpful. From the staff in the canteen to the lecturers, everybody was just very friendly and nice.
How did work placement on this course help you?
I did land registration, I was in the Property Registration Authority across from here and that was extremely valuable to me when I went for my postgrad application, so that was very helpful. I also had worked in criminal law practices outside of college that I think was a huge factor that helped me get accepted into UCD, it was vital that I did that.
What advice would you give to someone doing this course?
Enjoy it in your first few years, it does get more difficult as it progresses but take it in your stride. I would definitely recommend it, that’s probably the best advice I could give as someone who has gone on and done something else where, I’ve even recommended it to other people as a great progression table, that you could start off with SETU and you could go off elsewhere.
