Emma Seabrooke Greene from Wexford is a past pupil of Creagh Collge in Gorey. She is currently studying molecular biology with biopharmaceutical science and is a mentor with the Peer2Peer initiative in the Student Life and Learning at WIT.
How has the Peer2Peer participation benefited your college experience?
The Peer2Peer scheme is a fantastic resource offered to 1st years coming in. When I started this scheme wasn’t set up for my course but this year it was. I applied because I know the work the SLL do. They have helped me a lot. It must be remembered that the mentors are not mentors without the SLL team. I was very lucky with the group Ryan and I had this year for our first year. They came together through this scheme as the weekly check in zoom calls and the odd text helped them. We have had some information zoom calls and some zoom calls discussing who’s county is the best but one thing we all agree on if that the Peer2 Peer scheme works and boosts the confidence in them.
When the email came out asking for mentors. I didn’t think twice for replying. This scheme is a huge boost to not only your confidence, your CV but also to yourself believe. You believe you can do it. All the knowledge you find as a student can be passed on and used. Who knows it might be good to know where the best place for a nap is or the best place to have a cup of tea with a friend. Through my participation in this I’ve made friends for life and I know that is echoed through the scheme. We would not be the mentors we are without have a good back up. Our own mentors as such. The SLL team and course leader who have encouraged us since the beginning. That has made me for one want to do anything I can to help.
Why would you recommend studying in Waterford/WIT?
The Peer2Peer scheme is one of the brilliant things about WIT as well as the active societies and sports offered. WIT is a place where everyone has a place, a society that suits them and the same chance as everyone else no matter what.
What advice would you give to anyone considering studying Molecular biology with biopharmaceutical science course?
Embrace it, don’t do it half-hearted and always stay true to yourself. The mentors you will have will guide you, your lab technicians and lecturer will guide you and you will love it here. The hand on aspect is my favourite part as you really are learning things for your career after college no matter that me pharmaceutical or education.
