John Joy is originally from Waterford and attended Waterpark College in secondary school. John is 37 years old and decided to return to college after some time managing bars and nightclubs and it made sense for him to return home and attend South East Technological University.
What attracted you to study at South East Technological University?
My sister studied at SETU and went on to do a masters in social care, she gave the college a glowing reference and Waterford is also home so it made sense.
What have you done in life prior to studying here?
I used to manage bars and nightclubs.
What words of advice do you have for new students?
The first semester of first year was the hardest for me, try to keep moving forward then and things get a little easier as you progress. Also drop into the student life and learning, a great service and always willing to help.
What have been the highlights of your college experience?
I probably should say being nominated for student of the year in first and second year but if I'm honest its been getting to know my classmates, great group of people and I have no doubt that many of them will go on to be leaders in sport.
How did the student ambassador add to your college experience?
The student ambassador programme is so worth while as you are meeting new students on open days and their first few weeks of college. There is something very rewarding about helping someone out who is in a similar position to you only a few years later.
What motivated you to return to education as a mature student?
Since I was young I worked in bars and nightclubs and as I got a bit older I wanted a more balanced life. Don't get me wrong, the hospitality industry was very good to me but I enjoy sports and the gym and thought if i dont make a change now, I never will.
Anything you'd like to add?
I really cant speak highly enough of the lecturers in DSES. They are very approachable and so generous with their time.
