Know an adult in Waterford that needs help with their digital device? Students at WIT are again getting behind a community-based initiative ‘121 digital’ where students give free one-to-one lessons to learners.
Maria Cahill, a computing lecturer at WIT who is behind the initiative outlines the success to date.
“Last February and October 2016, the Department of Computing and Mathematics was delighted to host 25 attendees from Waterford and south Tipperary who took part in WIT's 121 digital course, working with 27 WIT student volunteers.”
“The average age of participants was 70 years and they worked with the WIT students to further improve their use of their digital devices; phones, iPads and desktops. Participants enjoyed working with the students in a welcoming and comfortable environment. Students and learners enjoyed the opportunity to meet, talk and learn from each other. Working one to one helped make it a fun learning environment for all.”
Each course consists of 4 lessons of 2 hours duration each. Topics can include: Gmail, social networking, Skype, etc. All lessons are delivered on the college campus in a group environment. Students were from across every department in the college.
Four two-hour lessons will take place, starting Tuesday, February 28th. There will be three more lessons on March 7th, 14th, and 21st. To sign up, please phone 051 302037 by Friday 24th February.
About 121 digital
121digital is a community building initiative which provides a structure and content for college students to volunteer as tutors to teach digital skills to a local adult during courses of four lessons (one per week). The adults bring their digital device (laptop/tablet/smartphone) to lessons with a list of their questions.
The tutor (student volunteer) empowers their learner by making a new 'window to the world' (access to the internet) available to the learner.
The programme runs in 40 centres across Ireland and was first established in 2010.
121digital, in colleges (3rd level), engages the undergraduates who volunteer and provides them the opportunity to teach digital skills, each to their learner - (one to one). Learners are adults in the local community.
