One of Waterford Institute of Technology’s (WIT) newest postgraduate programmes, the Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching in Further Education, has been shortlisted for a postgradireland Postgraduate Course of the Year Award in the Best New Course Category.

“The Best New Course Award recognises courses that have developed to meet the emerging needs of students and of industry” explains programme leader, Dr. Carol O’Byrne “and we are absolutely delighted that our programme has made the shortlist”.

The eighteen month Teaching Council accredited Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching in Further Education programme was designed in collaboration with key stakeholders in the further and adult education sectors and provides students with an opportunity to acquire the specialised qualification now required under law by all new entrants to further education teaching.

The course combines theoretical knowledge and practical teaching skills through a series of taught modules delivered on the WIT campus one day per week over three semesters and supported online through the Institute’s Virtual Learning Environment. A Teaching Practice Placement in each semester provides an opportunity for students to hone practical skills and develop professional competence in an authentic further education setting.

Whilst no prior experience of further education teaching is required, many of the current participants are experienced teachers in the sector. “We encourage our students to learn from each other and from their colleagues in the placement setting as well as from us” says Dr. O’Byrne, “and having a mix of experienced practitioners and novice teachers in the class ensures that everyone is provided with a range of perspectives and a rich learning environment”.

The Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching in Further Education has been welcomed by VECs and Education Centres throughout the South-East region and beyond, and the first cohort of students is due to complete the programme in January 2014.

WIT is currently inviting applications for September 2013. Applications can be made online through the Postgraduate Application Centre (www.pac.ie) from now until May 31st 2013. For more information on the programme and the application process, please see www.wit.ie/wd569.

A further two WIT postgraduate programmes, the MSc in Global Financial Information Systems and the MSc in Innovative Technology Engineering, will also be hoping to pick up prizes at the postgradireland awards ceremony which will take place in the Mansion House in Dublin on 18th April 2013.
