Three Transition Year students from across the South East undertook a one week work placement at the WIT Arena having won a DHSES Snapchat competition
The Department of Health Sport and Exercise Science (DHSES) at Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) ran a competition aimed at South East Transition Year students (TY) which gave the winners a week of work experience at the WIT Arena.
The winning students were Kelly Ryan from Loreto Clonmel, Claire Quigley St Brigid’s School Callan in County Kilkenny and Ronan Stapleton from St Mary’s Knockbeg College in County Carlow for the work experience at the WIT Arena.
Organiser and Co-ordinator of the Transition Year Work Experience Competition and lecturer in DHSES, Donna Dunne said, “All in all, the students had a terrific week here in the Department of Health, Sport & Exercise Science and we really enjoyed having them with us. We gained as much from the students as they did from us. They believed this was the best form of work experience they have done to date."
Snapchat success
DHSES ran the competition through their Snapchat account in semester one of the college year which proved hugely popular, with hundreds of TY students applying.
Upon their arrival, the students were greeted by the WIT Students Union President Michelle Byrne, Peer2Peer organiser Katie Dillon-Keane and Library Support Team member, Seamus Ryan as well as being given a tour of their new work place and the Cork Road campus.
Varied classes
Claire, Ronan and Kelly were then shown the wide range of classes that were available at the WIT Arena, including Sports Psychology, Health Promotion and Sports Performance. The students were also given the opportunity to sample the BA (Hons) in Culinary Arts degree with WIT’s celebrity chef, Edward Hayden.
Weekly highlight
The highlight of the week for the students was the kayaking trip with the Bachelor of Business (Hons) in Recreation and Sport Management students down the river Barrow from Clashganny to Graignamanagh in Co Carlow.
