WIT and Engineers Ireland discussed the technical roadmap of medical devices, scientific methods and R&D tax credits at the Annual Biomedical talk

Engineers Ireland and Waterford Institute of Technology hosted its annual biomedical on 31 January 2018. This was a joint South East region and Biomedical Engineering division event and forms part of the Division's 3rd Level Liaison Programme 2017-2018.

More than sixty attendees

This presentation looked at the technical road-map used in the development of a medical device as well as the pitfalls encountered. In parallel with the scientific methods used, an evaluation of how to implement R&D tax credits was discussed. Dr James Kennedy Chartered Engineer - CTO, Kastus Technologies was the guest speaker. Dr Kennedy is a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of Engineers Ireland. Kastus is an award winning Irish antimicrobial coating company.

The organiser was Mary Doyle-Kent, Programme Leader for BEng ordinary in Manufacturing Engineering. There were over 60 attending the talk including members of EI from industry, WIT students and staff. Waterford Institute Engineering students have 77% student membership of Engineers Ireland which is the highest uptake nationally.

Academic and industrial contexts

Mark Kelleher, Member of Engineers Ireland Biomedical Division and Principal Quality Engineer Mainstay Medica said “The Biomedical Engineering Division of Engineers Ireland is very grateful to Dr Kennedy for participating in this year’s programme of evening lectures. Dr Kennedy kindly shared some of his extensive experience in medical device development in both academic and industrial contexts, discussing both the technical roadmap used in the development of a medical device as well as the pitfalls encountered.

This technical content was complemented by a discussion of the R&D tax credit system which can be particularly advantageous to early-stage and start-up companies; in the context of the lecture, it is invaluable for students to be exposed to such wider perspectives.”
