Highly skilled local graduates are essential to Winthrop’s successful offering to its many Pharma, Med Tech and Advanced Manufacturing sector clients

Stuart Murphy has become the first winner of the inaugural Winthrop Energy Engineering Award at WIT. Stuart, from Tramore, Co. Waterford won the award for his poster presentation based on his dissertation on “The Feasibility of Upgrading a Small-Scale Hydro System in Ireland”. Nelson Paz, from Piltown, Co. Kilkenny, won second place for his poster presentation on “Energy performance analysis using Revit and IES VE”

The competition was open to final year students from the BEng (Hons) in Sustainable Energy Engineering programme. They were each asked to prepare and present posters on their dissertation topics. Gary Widger, project manager from Winthrop, along with academic staff Tom O’Brien, Tomas O’Donoghue and Colm Tynan from WIT adjudicated on the day. Gary, who graduated himself from the Building Services Engineering programme at WIT in 2006, complemented the students on the quality of their posters and confidence they displayed in the presentations. 

Managing Director, Ger O’Leary and HR Manager Enda Cullen of Winthrop Engineering were also present for the awards. While addressing the attendees Ger O’Leary emphasized the importance of this partnership with WIT. “Winthrop Engineering as a leading provider of mechanical and Electrical services is delighted to recognise graduate excellence in WIT”. He continued by saying “Highly skilled local graduates are essential to Winthrop’s successful offering to its many clients in the Pharma, Med Tech and Advanced Manufacturing sectors, and to the Mechanical and Electrical sector in general. Winthrop Engineering looks forward to offering further opportunities to WIT graduates to meet the talent requirements of its growing business.”

Colm Tynan, Programme Leader for the Sustainable Energy Engineering course, emphasised the importance of having Winthrop Engineering, such a reputable company from the south east region, associated with the course. “Winthrop offers our graduates fantastic career opportunities. They are a local company and benefit the local community. They have recruited many of our graduates in recent years and also take students on work placement each year”. Colm also thanked Winthrop for their generous sponsorship of the study tour to Edinburgh during semester 1.

Study Sustainable Energy Engineering at WIT

The BEng (Hons) programme in Sustainable Energy Engineering has been running in WIT since 2010. The programme focuses on Energy Systems in Buildings, their design, installation, operation and control. It has BIM (Building Information Modeling) and Energy Simulation integrated into all years of the programme. Graduates are in high demand and are actively recruited by Irelands leading engineering design consultants and mechanical and electrical contractors, and by energy management and facilities management companies. The programme offers fantastic career opportunities to work both within Ireland and abroad within the exciting field of energy engineering.
