8 Past & Present WIT Students Play Their Part In Wexford Youths Thrilling Penalty Shoot Out Cup Final Victory
Wexford Youths Women 2 - 2 Shelbourne Ladies (Wexford Youths Women win 4-2 on penalties)
Congratulations to Wexford Youths Women on becoming the FAI Women's Cup champions after defeating a strong Shelbourne Ladies outfit on Sunday after a nerve-wracking penalty shoot out in the Aviva Stadium. In a game that was showed live on RTE television, WIT were well represented both on the field of play and on the coaching staff for the Wexford Youths set up and all played their part in this historic cup victory.
Ciara Rossiter and Maria Delahunty, who are current and past students of the Institute respectively, had both grabbed the goals to level and take the lead for the Youths in the game but Shelbourne bounced back in the dying seconds of extra time to take the game to a penalty shootout.
In the shootout 1st year WIT student Tamara Furlong, who had replaced Mary-Rose Kelly through injury after 20 minutes, was the Youths hero when she saved Shelbournes first penalty and this turned out to be the shoot out and the games decisive moment. Three WIT present students in the squad included penalty saving hero Tamara Furlong, goal scorer Ciara Rossiter and Rachel Hutchinson. While the five WIT graduates in the squad included; goalscorer Maria Delahunty, Edel Kennedy, Carol Breen, Mary-Rose Kelly, Jessica Gleeson and Clare Conlon. On the coaching side Gary Hunt and video analyst Sean Burke are also former WIT students.
