Architect by profession Quynh Xuan Tran submitted her dissertation to the IES VE international awards after completing her postgraduate studies at WIT
Quynh Xuan Tran who is a graduate from the MSc in Sustainable Energy Engineering has come runner up in the prestigious IES VE “VE user of the Year Competition” after she submitted her research from her dissertation into the competition.
This is a fantastic achievement for Quynh Xuan Tran to be selected as a runner up in an international competition with both the overall winner and academic winner comping from Philadelphia and San Francisco respectfully.
The title of Quynh's research was “Investigation of IES-VE and its use in Building information modelling (BIM)” and was subtitled “Exchange of information between REVIT architecture and IES-VE”
She investigated the exchange of information between a BIM tool (Revit Architecture) and a BEM software (IES-VE) and looked at various complexity model levels which are created in Revit Architecture then exported to IES-VE under IFC and gbXML formats. She is an Architect by profession, she did a fantastic level of research and really probed the inner workings of IES-VE.
Importance in the modern world
Lecturer & Programme Leader MSc in Sustainable Energy Engineering Mervin Doyle explains to us the importance of this work in the modern world “IES VE is energy modelling software used for analysing building energy consumption and quantifying energy improvements, the software is used all over the world.”
“The MSc in Sustainable Energy Engineering programme in WIT is one of the few programmes in Ireland to teach this software at postgraduate level. The IES VE User of the year competition sought to find the most innovative use of the VE on a project, either commercial or academic – Quynhs research explored the area of bridging the gap between dynamic thermal simulations and Building information modelling (BIM). This is a fantastic achievement for an MSc student from Waterford Institute of Technology to be selected as a runner up in an international competition.”
A pleasure to study at WIT
Quynh Xuan Tran speaks on her time at WIT and her achievement “It's my pleasure to study the master course in Sustainable Energy Engineering at WIT. It's an amazing journey that I have learned a lot from the start to the end. My dissertation was inspired by my supervisor and course leader Mr. Mervin Doyle and I am so grateful for all of his support through my work.”
She continues “My research wants to investigate the interoperability between two software Revit Architecture and IES-VE in construction design. I am really into using IES-VE software as a subject in my master course and after finishing my dissertation, I decided to send my case study to IES-VE award. It's lucky that I got runner up for my research”
