10 ways to ease yourself into the 1 February CAO deadline

All News/Events

If you or someone you know is applying to the CAO this year, there’s some simple steps you can take to bring you closer to making the right decision

1. Right student, right course

Get your head around what course or college is the right fit for you by browsing through our How to research your CAO options booklet which has worksheets you can download and print.

There’s one for parents and guardians too – or anyone that’s helping you figure out what’s the right course for you.

2. Check restricted entry courses

With restricted entry courses you need to apply by 1 February. If you’ve a love of music for example, you’ll need to add our BA (Hons) in Music course to your CAO list by 1 February. It’s not possible to add it during change of mind (5 May-1 July).

3. Take the time to decide

Not sure yet what you’d like to specialise in? Or do you wish you could try a few courses as part of first year? Our common entry courses will give you time to decide.

4. Explore progression routes

Did you know you can often take another route to getting the qualification you want. Keen to do a level 8? Check out level 6 and 7 courses, and indeed further education courses and see if you can take the more scenic route if you’re not happy with the level 8 you are offered.

5. Read about real life experience

What do graduates do? What’s it like to move counties or live at home? What experience did other students have? Read our student stories – browse through our Student Stories section or go to Stories on each course page.

6. Be wowed by Waterford

Yay. So if you’ve discovered that some of your interests and abilities match up with our 70 CAO courses, you may want to explore the wonders of Waterford.

One of the keys to settling in to college is being familiar with it. We run one-hour campus tours year round to help you with your decision making. Find out more at www.wit.ie/campustours

Home or away? Read what two past graduates have to say about their experiences of living at home and commuting to Waterford, and moving to the city for college. Find out more at www.wit.ie/homeoraway

7. Want a try?

Sign up for an event designed to give you the experience of being a student on certain courses. We run events across various study areas e.g. computing, nursing, law, sports and exercise science, music to help prospective students try out what it may be like to study certain courses. We often run a mature student event.
