WIT’s Governing Body today agreed to recommence engagement with Institute of Technology Carlow in the Technological University process.
WIT is committed to the delivery of a Technological University in the South East to ensure the economic, social and cultural advancement of the region.
The Governing Body has said that a merger application will be only be committed to if it is confident that delivery of an appropriately resourced Technological University for the South East is the outcome of such a merger.
The announcement follows a meeting on 22 January where the results of a facilitation process were outlined to representatives from both institutes.
Background
The facilitation process between IT Carlow and SETU was established by the Minister for Education and Skills, with Ms Jane Williams appointed as facilitator in September 2015.
It involved a series of meetings which focused on previous engagement, the building blocks required to build trust and most importantly the potential for delivering a Technological University of the South East. Both institutes were mainly represented by the chairmen of the governing bodies and the presidents.
The facilitation process is almost at a conclusion. On Friday, 22 January, Ms Williams updated a joint meeting of Carlow and Waterford Institutes of Technology on the outcomes of the process.
