Patrick is "delighted to be given the opportunity to develop his work" and accept his award at this years Irish Academy of Management Conference
Patrick Buckland, a SETU PhD scholar studying the field of gender and academic leadership in the School of Business has won the Doctoral Colloquium paper award at this year’s Irish Academy of Management conference, hosted by the National College of Ireland.
The award is sponsored by the Irish Academy of Management and the British Academy of Management, and offers the awardee the opportunity to develop their work for presentation at the British Academy of Management 2020.
Patrick will attend and present at next year’s British Academy of Management Conference, which is one of the largest and most prestigious international events for business and management scholars, attracting close to 1000 world-class researchers from over 50 countries from around the world.
Academic leadership
Patrick’s paper titled, ‘Categorising Female Informal Professorial Academic Leadership: An Emerging Concept’ explores the informal leadership activities carried out by female academic leaders as well as the interplay between these activities and their social identity as women.
The paper proposes that increased emphasis should be given to the informal aspects of academic leadership which play a critical role in advancing future scholars, especially female academics.
Patrick’s paper complements his PhD research, which explores the beliefs of senior female academics on their career advancement into the professoriate and how their social identity as women influences their perception of their leadership roles within Irish and UK universities.
Speaking of his award, Patrick commented “I’m delighted to be given the opportunity to develop my work and potentially present it at the British Academy of Management Conference 2020.”
Before beginning his PhD journey in 2017, Patrick graduated from the Master of Business in Lean Enterprise Excellence.
