Dr Barry Coughlan, Assistant Director of Clinical Psychology at the University of Limerick gave a talk entitled “Resilience and Emotional Wellbeing – Cornerstones of Positive Mental Health” on Monday, 22nd April in the Auditorium at South East Technological University. The invitation to attend was extended to the public and over 230 people were in attendance.
Professor John Wells, Head of the School of Health Sciences at South East Technological University opened the event and spoke of the difficult times we are encountering both at personal and societal levels in the present economic climate.
Dr Couglan spoke of the role of Resilience and Emotional Wellbeing in meeting the challenges not only of present times but of life itself. The emphasis was on Positive Mental Health, and the content was underpinned by current research.
There followed a presentation from the Disability Officer, Patt O’Keeffe, around the work of the Disability Office at South East Technological University regarding the endeavours undertaken in supporting students with mental health difficulties whilst they are studying at South East Technological University.
A comment from the audience stated that “it was time to open the discussion around mental health in public forums” and that South East Technological University was playing its part in this by providing the presentations of the day. This statement was well supported by the audience.
