Work placement was a great experience, for Belinda to utilise all the skills she learned from college firsthand in a business.
Wexford native Belinda, is a final year mature student studying BA (Hons) in Marketing & Digital Media in WIT.
About me:
Prior to returning to college, I worked for over 15 years in the beauty industry, mostly in a self-employed capacity. Since returning, I have developed new skills, worked with a wide variety of people and thoroughly enjoy putting theory into practice. I have been the class rep for 2 years, ensuring all my fellow students are enjoying their experience of college and conversing with lecturers on the class’s behalf.
What attracted you to study at Waterford Institute of Technology?
I decided to return to college to complete a marketing degree, something I have always had an interest in and wanted to do. Contacting the college seeking information, I was directly put in contact with the lecturers involved in the course. The lecturers I spoke to showed such enthusiasm and passion about the course compared to other institutions and colleges I also contacted, I knew WIT was the place for me.
What have you done in life prior to studying here?
I attended a private Beauty College, Bronwyn Conroy's School of Beauty in Dublin after I left secondary school.
What words of advice do you have for new students?
My advice to a new student, yes it can be very daunting to start something new but everyone is in the same boat. I found interacting in lectures and asking questions a huge help in my studies. If you manage your time appropriately you can have the best of both worlds, good college life and socialise with fellow students. Definitely use the different platforms and library to really push yourself to the best of your ability, do not look back wishing you had done more.
What have been the highlights of your college experience?
There has been many highlights, looking back on what I have achieved from projects, presenting to a room full of students and peers, to creating a live website. I feel very proud of what I have achieved but so grateful to be able to learn from such great and enthusiastic lecturers. All giving their time and only an email away. The cherry on top was to receive the Dean’s List Award for my 3rd year, reinforces that hard work does pay off and pushes me harder to achieve more in my final year.
How did work placement add to your college experience?
Work Placement is such a great experience, utilising all the skills I learned from college first hand in a business. Giving a real insight how the marketing industry works.
What motivated you to return to education as a mature student?
In recent years I have come to appreciate that technology, marketing and online platforms are the way forward for any business to be successful. As a mature student I wanted to learn these skills and gain the knowledge to be able to adapt in a very fast moving industry.
