Wonder what it's like to participate in a weekend away with a college club? Here the SETU Kayaking Club give an overview of a weekend away in October 2018
WIT Kayaking Club found ourselves in Spanish Point, Clare, with a number of new members showing potential during our pool training sessions we decided to test them out.
Friday afternoon and Lectures ended for most at 5 o'clock. The trailer was packed and the bus had just pulled up. It was an excitement-filled journey and the new members were met with a wet Saturday morning for most of their first days on the water.
Neil Phelan the Club's Safety Officer went through his talk getting people warm and in the knowledge of the dangers of the water.
This didn't seem to phase any of the new members, paddles and kayaks in hand they stormed the beach. They showed off what they had been practicing for in the pool the last number of weeks. Members from Maynooth University Canoe & Kayak were also on hand for support with teaching and safety. They noted the skill shown by a number of the new members. The Saturday morning was a complete turnaround with Austrailian-like conditions the surf was truly on for the day again more improvement and thoughts are now turning to just pass Christmas when SETU will take on the number of different institutes at this year's Kayaking Intervarsities in UL.
