WIT Student Chefs team up with Local Syrian community

Students and staff were given an insight into Syrian food and hospitality by inviting chefs and families from the community to put on a lunch buffet

On 26 February Waterford Institute of Technology invited the local Syrian community to the institute. WIT is in the parish area of St. Pauls. The parish has a community outreach to families from the Syrian community, many of whom arrived in recent times seeking refuge from conflict and war in Syria. WIT linked up with St. Pauls to showcase the Syrian community’s culture by cooking up a storm in WIT’s kitchens.

As Syrians love to cook, five chefs were invited to join students of the Higher Certificate in Culinary Arts Year 2 in a unique collaboration to devise menus, prepare and cook recipes of Syrian culture.

Valuable Experience

While giving WIT students a valuable insight into Syrian food and hospitality, it also gave the Syrian chefs a positive experience working hands-on in professional kitchens. Students from BA(Hons) in Hospitality Management Year 1, welcomed our guests and enjoyed meeting their families and children.

During lunch, Irish music was provided by ‘Dave’s List’ which the Syrian community really enjoyed, also the presentation gifts made to the visiting chefs. We thank the Syrian community for visiting us this week and hope to see some of them as students or staff members of WIT in the future.
